This course expands communicative competence in German and provides a review of advanced grammar concepts. Primary emphasis is on the further development of oral and written skills, reading comprehension, vocabulary expansion, and a broad exposure to relevant topics of contemporary German culture and society. This content-driven course provides insights into essential subjects of 20th century German history and contemporary society, using a variety of literature, journalistic sources and film. The course will improve German conversation and literacy skills, and will strengthen critical reading and writing, as well as interpretative abilities. Significant grammatical concepts will be thoroughly reviewed throughout the semester. Conducted in German. Prerequisites: German 2260, or instructor's consent.

Introduces students to film production & industry in Arab world from early 20th c to
present. Considers ten Arabic films (with/without English subtitles) in which standard Arabic as well as variety of Arabic vernaculars are used. Discusses historical development of Arabic film, outlines technical aspects, explains interaction of cinema with political, social, artistic movements. Acquaints students with Arabic film & enhances language competence of students of intermediate Arabic.
