Undergraduate Programs: Russian Language and Studies
B.A. in RussianThe major in Russian consists of 27 credits in Russian beyond RUSS 1200 and must include a minimum of three semesters of Russian language beyond the first-year sequence and at least one 4000-level course in Russian literature or culture. The Russian faculty strongly encourages all majors to spend at least one semester studying abroad at a Russian university, preferably in their third year of the language. Equivalents to all the required courses for the major are available through study abroad. In addition, students must meet all degree, college and University graduation requirements including University general education. Departmental Honors are available for students majoring in Russian with a minimum 3.3 GPA. A three-course literature sequence must be completed with no grades below B or, at the discretion of the department, a paper may be written within the capstone course. Russian MinorThe department offers a minor in Russian, consisting of 15 credits beyond RUSS 1200. A minimum of 6 of these 15 credits must be in Russian courses numbered 3000 or above. In addition, a minimum of 9 of the 15 credits must be completed in residence. Elementary Russian Language SequenceThe Russian I and II sequence fulfills the College of Arts and Science foreign language requirement. Russian I and II are 6-hour courses, with five hours each of class work, and one hour each semester of lab work. The Russian I and II sequence uses the same textbook, a combination grammar/reader. At the end of Russian II, the students have been exposed to all of Russian grammar, have read expanded texts and have learned to express themselves in Russian, both orally and in writing, and will have begun to read selected works from Russian literature. Application for Advanced Standing in Foreign Language: Study AbroadRussian majors may study abroad for the summer, a semester, or a full academic year on the new MU in Saratov Program at Saratov State University. MU Partner programs through CIEE, Truman State and University of Kansas provide further options for study in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Information on these programs is available through the MU International Center. |
